Brave New World Chapter 5-10

Dystopia is loosely defined to be a "utopia in disguised". In Brave New World it is very easy to see that their society strives to be perfect and a utopia but they have their flaws. However no one (in a positive position) can see any issues with their society. They are next to required to take a drug named Soma (basically a happy pill). While reading I noticed that Bernard had sex with Lenina. This may seem insignificant but, if you continue reading you see that Bernard didn't want to have sex and wanted to just be an adult. Bernard doesn't take Soma, so I believe that the Soma controls the emotion and actions of the characters and people of the society. This scene was significant because it clearly shows what effect the soma has and how society is without the drug.

A movie I can easily relate this too is the movie Equilibrium. This movie the people of their society are required to take drugs that prevents them from feeling emotion. This society is forbidden to feel any form of emotion such as happiness, sadness, remorse, or even being overwhelmed by the beauty of art. They believe this society is perfect however many people that rebel can see that there are flaws and should be taken down.
